Spring 2017 Teaching Ideas Workshop
From Fake News to Clickbait: Teaching Students to Evaluate Online Information
Monday, April 3, 12:00-1:30pm
Location: Perkins 217
Sponsored by The Graduate School
A recent Stanford study concluded that most students lack the critical skills to evaluate different kinds of online information. Besides high quality journalism and online sources, today’s students are bombarded with biased news, opinion pieces, clickbait, sponsored news (now called “native advertising”), satire, propaganda, tweets, and false news stories designed to generate advertising revenue. In this hands-on workshop, we will discuss recent research about students’ online reasoning skills, identify specific skill gaps among Duke students, and suggest lessons and activities that can be incorporated into the classroom.
Please bring a device or laptop to this session. Lunch will be provided.
